Tourism is emerging to be the most powerful engine and driving force for the global development. Since tourism is a high profile sector, of late, most countries are striving to fuel their economies, augment employment opportunities and add to their natural and cultural wealth through tourism development. United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) projects tourism to become mega service industry with estimated 1.6 billion international arrivals and over 2 trillion US dollars revenue generation annually by the year 2020. Creation of new jobs in tourism is 1.5 times faster than the world average in the past 15 years. UNWTO is heralding on governments around the world to unleash tourism’s job creation potential by improving and increasing the quality of tourism education.
At the regional level, as per World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), growth in tourism sector in South Asia is forecasted in around 9 percent annually. At the national end, it is estimated that the growth in travel and tourism in term of employment in tourism sector in Nepal will be at 10 percent annually.
Shortage of qualified and well versed personnel to serve the sector is one of the major problems that Nepal is encountering in its strife to build an efficiently operational and managed tourism industry.
